An Introduction to Interpersonal Psychotherapy for Adolescents (IPT-A) with Dr. Laura Mufson, PhD

Dr. Mufson is also the co-author of the prevention model (IPT-AST) and the model for preadolescent depression (FB-IPT). She has written numerous publications on adolescent depression, temperament, and psychopathology. Dr. Mufson conducts training workshops on IPT-A internationally.

About IPT-A:
IPT-A is a time-limited (12–16 sessions) individual psychotherapy for adolescents ages 12–18 suffering from depression. IPT-A focuses on how relationship issues are related to the onset or ongoing occurrence of depressive symptoms.

IPT-A aims to help:
1) Adolescents recognize their feelings and think about how interpersonal events or conflicts might affect their mood
2) Improve communication and problem-solving skills
3) Enhance social functioning and lessen stress experienced in relationships; and decrease depressive symptoms.

About Dr. David A Brent:
David Brent is a child and adolescent psychiatrist trained who has worked as a researcher in the area of adolescent suicide for four decades at the University of Pittsburgh, where he is a Distinguished Professor and holds an Endowed Chair in Suicide Studies. His work has focused on the ascertainment of risk factors for adolescent suicide and the translation of those findings into interventions to reduce suicidal risk. In collaboration with many others, he helped to identify the role of mood disorders, substance, and firearms as risk factors for adolescent suicide and has delineated some mechanisms by which suicidal behavior is transmitted in families. He has helped to develop and test novel methods for the assessment of suicidal risk through such diverse methods as adaptive screening, neural correlates of suicidal thinking, and machine learning of health records. David has also helped to develop and test psychotherapeutic approaches to depressed and suicidal youth, including a brief, app-supported intervention to reduce suicidal risk in high-risk adolescents.

David currently leads an NIMH-funded Center, which is a collaboration with over 30 other colleagues, with the goals of enhancing the capacity of pediatric primary care to detect, triage, and manage depressed and suicidal youth, and training a diverse, national cohort of early career scientists focused on youth suicide. He co-founded and has led a clinical program, Services for Teens at Risk, that has treated over 7000 suicidal adolescents and young adults. David led an NIMH-funded research training grant for 3 decades and has helped to train many highly successful researchers and academic leaders.

About Dr. Kenneth Ginsburg MD
Kenneth R. Ginsburg MD, MSEd, is a Professor of Pediatrics at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. He practices social adolescent medicine — medicine with special attention to prevention and the recognition that social context and stressors impact both physical and emotional health. The theme that ties together his clinical practice, teaching, research and advocacy efforts is that of building on the strength of teenagers by fostering their internal resilience.

Dr. Ginsburg is the Co-Director of the Center for Parent and Teen Communication, which promotes the health, character and well-being of adolescents through education, research and advocacy. He developed the teen-centered method, which helps youth to generate, prioritize and explain their own proposed solutions to social problems and to teach clinicians how to better serve them. In addition to his research publications, he also has five parenting books including, Building Resilience in Children and Teens: Giving Kids Roots and Wings, Raising Kids to Thrive: Balancing Love with Expectations and Protection with Trust, and Letting Go with Love and Confidence, all published by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). He is also the author of Reaching Teens: Strength-Based Communication Strategies to Build Resilience and Support Healthy Adolescent Development, a comprehensive multimedia toolkit published by the AAP.

Dr. Ginsburg lectures widely to national and international parent and professional audiences. He has also worked closely with The US Military, The Boys and Girls Club of America and The National Congress of American Indians to deepen the role of resilience-building strategies in their programming.

His most recent books are Thriving in Academia (with Pam Ansburg and Mark Basham), and Study Like a Champ (with John Dunlosky). He was a founding co-editor of APA’s journal Scholarship of Teaching and Learning in Psychology, co-chaired the APA General Psychology Initiative, and is past president of the Society for the Teaching of Psychology, and Psi Chi, the International Honor Society in Psychology.

About Jill Harkavy Friedman:
A pioneer in suicide research, she was the first researcher to ask high school students about suicidal ideation and behavior. Dr. Jill Harkavy-Friedman leads the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s growing research grant program. She works with over 200 scientific advisors to evaluate progress in the field and chart the next areas of inquiry to yield impactful insights and strategies for suicide prevention.

About Dr. Wintersteen

Dr. Wintersteen is Associate Professor and Director of Research in the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University. In collaboration with OMHSAS, he has served as Co-Investigator and Co-Program Developer of several SAMHSA-funded programs focused on youth suicide prevention across Pennsylvania. He is Director of the Pennsylvania Higher Education Suicide Prevention Coalition and co-chairs the Delaware Valley Medical Student Wellness Collaborative. In addition to his grant-funded projects, Dr. Wintersteen has served on national task forces convened by the Suicide Prevention Resource Center, the American Association of Suicidology, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, and the National Institute of Mental Health. He was a consultant to the National Center for the Prevention of Youth Suicide (NCPYS) and served as the Co-Chair of the Pennsylvania Youth Suicide Prevention Initiative for nearly a decade. As a clinical psychologist at Jefferson, Dr. Wintersteen provides clinical care, educates students and residents, and carries out his research on youth suicide prevention.
